If you decided to place some of your belongings into a storage unit, you undoubtedly want them to remain in the best condition possible while you are not around to monitor them. Precautionary steps can help to keep rodents and insects from causing havoc in your rented space. Here are some tips to ensure your storage unit remains pest-free.

Check Over Your Items In Detail

Before you place anything into storage, it is imperative that you evaluate items closely so you do not bring pests into the storage unit with your belongings. Dump out cardboard boxes and storage containers full of items and then place the items back inside after you have determined there are no harbored insects or mice hiding among your belongings. Wipe down and/or vacuum furniture so insect eggs, spiders, or fleas are not present. If you do not assess your items before storing them, you may wind up with a pest infestation in your rented space the next time you visit it.

Make Sure The Unit Is Adequate

It is best to conduct an inspection of the exact storage unit you intend to rent before you sign any paperwork indicating you are responsible for paying for the space. Check that interior walls do not have cracks or holes present. Look at the ceiling for voids around light fixtures or in corners. Make sure the door for the unit seals completely. Test the seal by pouring a bottle of water near the bottom of the door, open it, and see if it had seeped into the unit. If a unit does not seem completely secure, ask to see another one.

Avoid Storing Any Food In Your Unit

Pests will attempt to gain access to space where there is food to eat. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that you refrain from storing any edible items. Some insects enjoy nibbling upon cardboard. If you have smaller items to contain in a storage unit, consider placing them inside plastic storage tubs rather than using boxes.

Always Check Your Surroundings When Entering Your Unit

In addition to evaluating items being placed in a unit, it is wise to conduct checks of the surroundings of your unit's door before you enter your rented space. Make sure there are no flying insects nearby before you open the door. Look down at the ground to ensure no crawling insects or rodents are lurking nearby as well.
